Bill Raggio Resigns from Nevada State Senate - Washoe County Commissioners to Appoint Replacement

Today, Nevada State Senator Bill Raggio, the longest serving senator in state history, formally announced his resignation from the Nevada State Senate, effective January 15, 2011.  The Douglas County Republican Central Committee thanks Senator Raggio for his long years of public service.

Senator Raggio announced that after 56 years of public service he felt it was time to retire.  Late last year the Douglas County Republican Central Committee passed a resolution encouraging Senator Raggio to resign from his Senate Minority Leader position, which he did November 4th, 2010.

Senator Raggio’s resignation puts the Washoe County Commission front and center since it is that body that will select his replacement under Nevada Law.  According to Nevada Revised Statues 218A.260 "Procedure for Filling Vacancy in Office," the Washoe Commissioners have an opportunity to appoint a true Conservative Republican that will effectively represent the interests of the citizens of Washoe County and the Great State of Nevada.

This transition illuminates the need and opportunity for citizens to be more involved in the political process by interacting with their elected officials. Walter Nowosad, Chairman of the Douglas County Republican Central Committee, recently wrote an article encouraging citizens to remain engaged in the political process.  We strongly encourage the citizens of Washoe County and the State of Nevada to communicate with the County Commissioners to offer their input and suggestions as the commission selects Senator Raggio’s replacement.

Nevada is in the middle of an extreme budget crisis and this 2011 Legislative Session will address critical issues that will impact Nevada for generations.  Other significant legislation such as redistricting and many other bills, provide an opportunity for the Nevada Legislature to reaffirm our independent Nevada way of life.  See Prefiled Bills of the 76th (2011) Session.

We hope that the Washoe Commissioners will appoint a true Republican that will work tirelessly to serve the interests of the citizens of Nevada by following the 2010-2012 Nevada Republican Party Platform established at the 2010 Nevada Republican Convention.

Please contact the Washoe County Commission and be sure to forward this article and requests for action to all those in Nevada which you think may be interested.  The Washoe County Republican Party is also an effective place for citizens to voice their opinions on Senator Raggio’s replacement.
